Created in 1845 as a source for hydroelectric power, the Augusta Canal runs 8.5-miles just south of the Savannah River. Still in use as a power generating facility, the canal is also open for recreational events including canoeing, kayaking, hiking, jogging and bank fishing. During some nights during the warm summer, spring and fall months, live music cruises offer passengers the chance to relax, enjoy the scenery and take in the music. At the southern end of the canal, which reaches from a few miles north of Augusta to the center of town, is the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area Interpretive Center, offering a great way to understand the history of the canal and its importance in the region's economy.
Open daily dawn - dusk.
Free. Special event prices vary, check website for details.
