The story of civilization in Augusta and the surrounding region of the Central Savannah River are analyzed at the Augusta Museum of History, incorporating archaeological findings, antique items and recreated scenes. Areas of particular focus include pre-European Native American tribes, transportation and the railroad industry, Augusta's past as a hub of medical science and life during the Civil War. Other museum spaces include a temporary exhibit area and a child-friendly discovery center, filled with hands-on activities and displays. Located in downtown Augusta near the Savannah River, nearby attractions include National Science Center's Fort Discovery, the Morris Museum of Art and The Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson.
